Crawley United and Hassocks FC are the winners on the Mini’s Cup Final Day
The Horsham District Youth league Mini Soccer finals were held at Ashington Cougars FC at the weekend. The format was similar to the champions league with a group stag, with the winners & runners up progressing to a Knock out cup and the 3/4th place into the Plate trophy. Each match involved 2 games so that the whole squad could feature in competitive matches.
In the under 9s age group 30 teams started out and the Knock Out Final was contested between Ashington Cougars and Hassock Hawks. In a closely fought first game Hassocks scored in the last minute to take a slender lead into the second game. Hassocks then started the better in the second game and in the space of 5 minutes scored 3 goals in quick succession . Although Cougars manage to score one back Hassocks held out to become the first winners of the under 9s Knock out cup.
In the Plate competition and in another tight game with Billingshurst FC fighting back to 4-3, Faygate Falcons manage to score two late goals to secure their victory.
In the under 10s 32 teams contested the cup competition. In the plate trophy competition East Grinstead Meads AC narrowly beat Dorking wanderers 3-1 over the two games. The first game was a very tight affair with no one team holding the edge. In the first half of the second game East Grinstead found another gear and scored the two goals that would win them the final.
In the Knock Out Cup Crawley United Blue took on a Crawley Down Gatwick, a local derby. Both sides played some attractive football. Crawley Down raced into a 2 goal lead only to see Crawley United peg them back and it finish 2-2 after the first game. Could we see our first final go to penalties. In the second game this time Crawley United gained a 2 goal advantage before Crawley Down managed to get a goal back. The final half saw Crawley Down throw everything they had at United but Crawley stood firm including a great save pushed onto the bar from the Crawley keeper in the dying minutes, and held out to win the cup for the first time.
Marc Oratis HDYFL mini soccer Co ordinator stated afterwards” It was a fantastic advert for youth football, the standard was excellent and all participants can hold their heads up high, well done to all the boys that took part"
